On the shores of Lake Päijänne, Finland’s longest and deepest lake, more than 30 farmhouses, average age 150 years old, have been gathered onto a nature-protected island to form Savutuvan Apaja. The evening begins with a traditional smoke sauna, heated slowly over 5–6 hours with birch and alder, the original, unhurried way Finns have bathed for centuries. Afterwards, a dinner built from local, seasonal ingredients is served in a unique dining hall, its atmosphere set by the glow of an open fire and candlelight, while your hosts share the stories carried by these century-old walls.
